My first impression on the movie when I saw its title is that it’s about love and illegal drugs. I was also half-expecting this movie to be an excuse for the makers to make Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal appear naked on screen. I was somewhat surprised though that I was able to enjoy the whole movie while learning some pharmaceutical stuff. I learned that Zoloft has been around for years and it can increase the likelihood of suicide in teen users (as mentioned by Jake’s character to another rep), why one should not take multiple doses of Viagra in one go and just how dirty the pharmaceutical field can get.
Love and Other Drugs is set around 1997 telling the story of Jaime Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal). The film opens with Jaime as a salesman in an appliance store, passing off as a jerk by hooking up with the boss’ girlfriend. A typical charismatic, smart, good-looking jerk without too much care with this life or relationships. Coming from a family of achievers and freshly unemployed, he decides to take on the job of a drug salesman for Pfizer. The story began to change when he met the unconventional Maggie Murdoc (Anne Hathaway) in a clinic, while waiting for her medications for early-onset Parkinson’s. They had a one night stand and then started seeing each other seriously while facing a lot of problems along the way such as the fear of commitment (mostly Maggie’s),the struggle to prove the self to others (mostly Jamie’s) and not to mention, Maggie’s deteriorating state of health.
I found the exchange of witty banter and steamy scenes enjoyable for most parts of the movie. I was particularly amused at Jaime having panic attacks when he said “I love you” to Maggie with her replying “I said I love you to a cat once” in an attempt to calm him down. However, things started to get serious when Maggie’s condition worsened and they started to find ways on managing her Parkinson’s. It’s not that I’m against the emotional side of it because I think it’s appropriate, but the way the movie suddenly became serious was not properly transitioned in my opinion.
Most, if not all, know how much Jake and Anne complement each other as actors. I just wish they’d be given a more solid material the next time so their acting prowess will be showcased. In case you are wondering, the screenplay was lifted from the non-fiction book Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman by Jamie Reidy which means that it’s a true story. The movie was set in the year 1997 but some drugs that were mentioned are still being used today, some were even believed to have side effects like in Zoloft birth defects. Also, I thought that this movie became a marketing platform for Pfizer as Zoloft and Viagra were mentioned a lot of times.
